Choosing dog daycare for a small dog means looking beyond a convenient location or a big play area. Your dog needs companions who suit their play style, attentive supervision and room to take a break. A confident terrier and a reserved toy poodle may be similar in size but enjoy very different experiences. Before choosing a facility, ask how it gets to know each dog and builds a daily routine around their comfort.

Start by asking whether the facility considers size, temperament and energy when organizing groups. Smaller dogs can be vulnerable during rough interactions with much larger dogs, even when the larger dog intends to play. However, size alone does not establish compatibility. Ask how staff assess newcomers and what happens when a dog needs a different group. At Skiptown in Denver, CO, playgroups are based on size and demeanor, with a compatibility day that helps the team assess each dog’s fit.

Ask what staff training covers, how many dogs each person supervises and how coverage changes throughout the day. You want a clear explanation of how the team recognizes discomfort and responds when play becomes too intense. Staff should notice when a dog repeatedly tries to leave an interaction or gets overwhelmed by persistent chasing. Find out how the facility provides space for those dogs and communicates concerns to owners. These conversations can tell you more than photos of a busy playroom.
